Krad stood at the bottom of the ship looking over the broken ruins of the area before him. He could make out what once was possibly pillars that stretched all the way to the desert skies, the skeletal remains of buildings that were possibly used to house the ancient people's many wares or cattle. Now, however, all that was left over was the skeleton of a once vibrant past. The only substance that seemed to be left were certain stone structures the ancients must have used to build this settlement. Any other materials seemed to have wasted away or have been carried off by the encroaching sands. It made Krad stop and wonder; what did this place once look like? Was it a Keep for a once strong and powerful army? Or maybe a castle even, in the center of a large kingdom that now rests in the belly of this monstrous desert. History was all around him, but they ere not here to receive its teachings.
Just as Krad went to take a step forward, he felt a small bump against him, which he immediately recognized as Meiling. He glanced over his shoulder just to verify, and when he saw her ears poking out her sea of dark hair, he smirked, then moved forward again towards the entrance to the main building. Though she was a lot closer to him now than usual, he was still glad that she was nearby. There could be so many traps laying in wait. He would have to react fast in order to protect the both of them. The closer she was, the better. ~This place looks like it's just ready to fall apart...~ The blue-haired avdenturer thought to himself as he looked upon the decrepit old Keep he was walking towards. ~If it doesn't just collapse on top of us from it being so old, the weight of the sand might be what makes it finally give. We can't spend too much time in here.~
And that's when he heard such a timid voice speak out behind him. "Krad?" It chirped, causing the adventurer to stop dead in his tracks. Was that Meiling's voice? He turned sideways to face her and that's when he could see it. Even though she did her best to avoid eye-contact, he could still catch feint glimmers of doubt within her. "I'm scared..." Once she said this, it was like a revelation washed over the young man's face like a heavy wave. How far have they gone? How much have they done? How long have they gone without once slowing down or taking a break? Of course Krad hadn't taken a second thought about any of this. He was built for this kind of lifestyle. He'd been a soldier, a fighter, and conqueror, and an adventurer throughout the span of twenty-some years. It was in his soul, but Meiling...
It must have only been a week's time since they first met in deep space. Before that moment, her life was quiet and peaceful. The most strenuous task for her was playing with her family and assisting with household chores. How could he expect her to adjust from that lifestyle to... well...all of this in such a short time. Had he even ever asked her how she was doing? How she felt? If she needed a break? If she even wanted to do any of this?
"I don’t want to be something I can’t…" When she said this, her eyes met with his and he could see... he could see her longing for an answer. Those bright crystal blue eyes crying out for something secure to grasp, so that her quivering heart could find peace. She was scared... scared of the unknown. Scared of the expectations that could be placed upon her. Even though Krad long since forgot how to empathize with others, he could still recognize that look. The worry, the self-doubt, and most of all, the fear... all used to belong to the proud warrior that he was today.
Krad was not always so confident. He was not always so strong and so proud. He was, as all humans start out, but only a child. Though this child was destined for greatness, or so he was told. Being born the son of a warlord, Krad was stripped away from his childhood at a very early age. He had been branded a warrior since the day he was born and was forced to live up to that title, or face the disappointment of not only his friends and family, but his entire race.
If only back then there was someone he could look up to. Someone he could confide all his fears and doubts to. If only there was someone there to comfort him in his time of need, maybe now he wouldn't be such a jaded and empty shell of a Human. There was only one problem now... and that was how to respond to Meiling. He was once in the same position she is in now; fearing that a title would dictate how she would forever live out her life, fearing it will change her, and fearing disappointment if she cannot live up to such a change.
What could he possibly say? What could he go off of? There was nobody there to teach Krad these types of things. There was nobody there to help Krad to guide Krad when he was in these types of situations. Nobody ever gave him the answers, nor did they even attempt to try? Without that, what could he possibly give to her? And that is when he decided. He would not allow his history to become her burden. If nothing else, the least he could do was give her something he had never received: something he always wished someone would give him: Choice.
Krad removed his sword from his back and found a broken pillar to rest the weapon on, then he approached Meiling with a gentle smirk. "What are you talking about? It's not like you're going to change, or anything. You'll still be Meiling." He lightly dropped a hand on her head in between her ears and rubbed her gently. He then lowered his face to meet with hers, the oceans of his eyes swelling up as they met with the crystals within hers, and he smiled. "I'd never force you to do anything I didn't think you were ready for..." His voice was much more calm and sincere now than any other time. It was deep; soothing even, but then it quickly changed into his normal, joking tone and he gave her a humorous smirk. "But being a Galaxy Angel does sound pretty cool. Doncha wanna be cool?" He laughed a bit, his playfulness showing itself.
To him, he already knew what type of person Meiling was.He knew that she was going to choose to keep moving forward. It's just that she was inexperienced. She needed his reassurance that, no matter what happened he would always be there for her, even if it meant reminding her who she was and who she would always be: Meiling.
