As the unyielding, rock hard surface of the planet came closer and closer Kairu fumbled with the various buckles and straps of the seat, carefully making sure he buckled himself in completely. The craft continued hurtling towards the ground, the fire from reentry working away at the already damaged heat shields. The sound of the vortex outside the craft was deafeningly loud, but Kairu could not hear it. The sonic wave from the explosion had burst his ear drums, causing the near unbearable pain that he now felt, he did not yet know if that damage was permanent or not. The only thing Kairu had to be grateful for was the fact that the bleeding from his ears seemed to be slowing.
As the ground neared Kairu began to grow uncertain that the parachutes would deploy, if they were still intact. As the craft entered the lower atmosphere he knew something was wrong. With less than a minute until impact, nothing but a flaming crater would be left of the ship if the the parachutes did not deploy soon. Kairu cursed his bad luck as he cut off the straps holding him into his seat with his plasma claws, time did not allow him to carefully undo the restraints. He made his way to the manual deploy switch on one of the control panels, which was just out of reach from where he was sitting. He guessed that the sensors on the outside of the ship to alert the parachutes to deploy were malfunctioning, probably blown to bits by the explosions. If he could deploy the parachutes manually, it might soften the impact enough for him to survive. If he was wrong, and the parachutes were destroyed themselves he would be dead even if he stayed in the seat.
Kairu braced himself in preparation for deploying the parachutes. He held his breath for a moment before flipping the switch that could save his life, instantly after flipping the switch the ship slowed down substantially, Kairu hit himself against the dashboard despite having braced himself, the sudden change in speed surprising. He smiled to himself for a moment, dodging death by mere chance, but his relief was short lived.
Unknown to Kairu, the parachutes have been considerably damaged in the explosion, the ropes attaching them to the ship in particular were damaged. When one of the parachutes failed, it sent the ship falling towards the ground at a dangerous speed, the remaining parachutes not able to slow the ship as much.
As the ship began to fall again Kairu had only mere seconds before it hit the ground. With no time left he threw himself to the ground, moments later the ship struck the planet, and sliding for a good hundred meters before grinding to a stop. Kairu had been thrown against the wall again. The moment he hit the wall, everything had gone black. Kairu's whole life flashed before his eyes at that moment, and for a second he could of sworn he was dead.
What seemed like only seconds later, which in reality was a good ten minutes, he woke up. The unbearable pain in his ears had returned from being thrown around the ship, along with a searing pain in his side that made it hard to breath. He curled into a fetal position letting out a cry of agony that he could not hear. He laid like that, he could only wait for the pain to go away with time, but it did not.
Driven by his will to live, he slowly sat up, and for the first time, got a clear view of the damage. Smoke now filled most of the cockpit, making it hard to breath. Kairu was not strong enough to make his way to the exit of the ship however, which was all the way down the hall. Powered by adrenaline, Kairu dragged himself to the windows on the front of the ship, spotting one that broke during impact. Kairu was so weak he hardly even noticed the small cuts from the broken glass as he threw himself out the window.
He rolled down the mound of dirt that had formed in front of the ship from the impact like a rag doll and where he ended up at the bottom is where he remained.
