Foster wasn't enjoying this day. He should have been, what with the death of register #1864. For a second, he thought about that number. One thousand eight hundred sixty four. That was how many of those beasts had been killed to date. His team was responsible for at least a fourth of those kills.
Every time an extermination mission was successful, a giant celebration was held in the team's honor. Captain Foster had grown to love these events, even if he was normally self-contained and set against fun.
The feast had already been prepared, and it was on the mind of the whole squad, even before they found the worm. By the time the monster stopped wailing, everyone was practically bouncing with excitement.
But when the bike crashed, that feeling was completely decimated. The two medics, who were part of the original four bikes that had attacked, quickly rushed over to where the injured had stopped. Captain Foster accompanied them as they went. Even with their haste, the pair had gone off a long way in their wreck.
The girl, a species only one of the medics had seen before, was screaming and crying. She seemed to be shrieking out a name, "Krad", that was likely her companion. The man was human, and in what seemed to be worse condition then the female. They layed close to each other, the man with his arms reached out toward his friend, obviously a failed attempt to hold her to him. Blood was rapidly pooling around the two, and mixing together, making it indistinguishable from each other. Neither of them had much time, so quickly, the two medics checked over the crash victims. The girl was obviously alive, but was thrashing so hard it made it difficult to get near. The human's heart was a light pat against his chest and his breathing was indiscernible.
With all the speed of an elite team, stretchers were brought over to the site and within moments, the two were strapped to two different sand bikes. A special metallic cover was placed over them which would allow them to have a perfectly smooth and comfortable trip back to the camp. Hopefully they would be able to survive the nearly two hour trip. Captain Foster knew that his feast wasn't going to be held anytime soon, likely the reason he was so down in the dumps. The tragedy of the two strangers didn't need to be mentioned, it was too apparent how much it weighed on all of the black, leathery faces of the Tenovem.
Amy Heatherfield was most assuredly having a "hey day". It was a marvelous idea to come looking for pieces of cybertronics in this Tenovem salvage camp. With Elle in a sort of limbo back at the palace, Amy had all the time to find parts for her. The girl's database was so empty, Amy needed to scour the lands for ways to fill it up properly. Elle's wiring was different than the norm, so basic AI programs wouldn't do the trick. The simple fact that Elle needed to drink, eat, sleep, and breathe was actual very advanced.
She had come with her friend, Zio Xenaphaleus. He was off talking to one of the elders of the camp whom studied under Zio. Right now, Amy was at a small, wooden stand that was displaying assorted pieces of technology. She was in the midst of purchasing an item when the sand bikes flew past her.
At first she was excited. She had heard of the big celebration that was supposed to happen that day. There was no doubt that the Tenovem would be successful, they had a gift for such things, so Amy was already set to party.
Multiple Tenovem carrying trays laden with food came out of tents, almost as if it were supposed to be a surprise, even though everyone already knew what was going to happen. Tables were being set up and just as the food was about to be set down, the Tenovem medics from the squad hopped off of the slowing bikes. Each were carrying a bloody and beaten body. They rushed into a healers tent as people looked on.
The sands around the camp were much calmer than the desert the squad had just come from. Even so, the ground was nothing but sand, almost the color of dirt, of which covered all of the tents and many objects that had been sitting outside for more than an hour. This gave things a very harsh look, even the medic's tent.
Amy, with some authority, rushed over to see what was going on. A number of the Tenovem seemed like they wished to follow suit, but none put the thought to action.
Amy arrived in so many seconds and quickly pulled back the flap of the tent. Inside was two small, bright lights, indicating healing spells. Several members of the squad stood near the back and sides of the space. In the center was two tables near each other. The table to Amy's right held a girl who seemed to be a Myrthra, a species she had come to know from the research ship. She was slowly being healed by the Tenovem elder that learned from Zio.
Speaking of whom, Zio himself was healing the second person on the table to Amy's right. Zio seemed to be going at an exponentially faster pace than his pupil.
Amy was used to Zio's strength, and therefore didn't pause when she saw it displayed. Even if she hadn't seen his use in magic before, she wouldn't be caught off guard. Her attention was completely focused on the man that Zio was healing.
"What in the name of space pirates! Krad?!"
Amy was completely surprised to see him here. She was even more furious that he had pulled an innocent girl into his life. Amy knew what Krad did, she knew very well.
See, Eritseas is famous for its host of mercenaries. There are so many that it is rare for a criminal to last long should they choose to hang around the planet. For that reason, outside forces rarely pursue ships that come toward Eritseas. Because of this, Eritseas is also an extraordinary place to hide from other governments.
This function of the planet was often used by Mr. Zephyros. The space pirate would fly his ship to the planet and hide out for so many days until his pursuers forgot about him.
During those times, he often ran into the traveling Amy. She didn't have much of a taste for him, but still liked him enough to not send his butt to prison.
Although, seeing him here now was either the last straw, or a terrible tragedy.
